Nathaniel C. Banks
What do the terms “diversity” and “multicultural” mean to you? For me, diversity in its most positive sense is akin to “university”, which implies one big whole consisting of many distinct parts. Just as the universe is multi-faceted, so our little “universe at UIUC ” is multi-cultural. Each culture, although distinct in its own right, is also a part of a larger “universe” . So, if we think of our little “universe-ity” in those terms, the African American experience is one small, but vital entity in that universe. For it to be able to contribute in a positive way, its uniqueness in the system must be highly valued. If you try to fit all of those unique cultures into one space, what you will end up with is a “black hole”. Although in this universe, some might even refer to it as a “white” hole.
